French (and Yoga!)

When did you start working Alia?

2016

Tell us about something interesting you did in class this year?

Lots! We went on some great excursions to see French movies throughout the year. I experimented with using different video clips of young French people showing us about their lives and schools.

What do you enjoy about teaching your subjects?

I love how through teaching a foreign language I get to learn so much about my students – their interests, their lives, their families, their personalities – as these are all the things that we learn to talk about in French from almost the very first lesson. I’m also deeply enthusiastic about grammar… it thrills me when students also enjoy the technical side of language as well as the joys (and challenges!) of communicating in French.

What do you like about working at Alia?

Most of all I love that I can just teach! I’m not hamstrung by bureaucracy or endless meetings. Instead I get to spend my day thinking up new and creative ways to teach, and then teaching those concepts and ideas, all whilst getting to know my students in a (hopefully!) meaningful way. And that makes my job far more enjoyable and worthwhile.

What do you get up to with your time outside school?

Hanging out with my daughter. Practising yoga and meditation; reading; travelling far and wide. Bush-walking, movie-going and listening to live music with my partner. Procrastinating. Not filling out profile forms like this.

What else do you have to say for yourself?

Come along for Yoga on Thursday lunchtimes in 2018!
