On the September holidays this year, I had the unique privilege of being able to immerse myself in the culture and language of the French-speaking country of New Caledonia. While staying with a host family in Noumea and speaking only in French, I not only attended French speaking courses with the CREIPAC organisation, but was taken on various excursions which truly solidified my appreciation for Noumea specifically. The excursions included, but were not limited to, visits to a school dedicated to patisserie creation, the Djibao cultural centre, and the local aquarium.
All these exploits were made infinitely more enjoyable by the other Australian students I was learning with. I am truly grateful for the unending efforts of Harriet (Alia College French Teacher) and the CREIPAC coordinator Valerie in creating a French exchange experience for me and I would highly recommend the experience to any and all French students, no matter your level of fluency. I can say with certainty that not only will your French improve drastically, but you’ll discover possibly the best gelato in the Southern Hemisphere. It’s a great opportunity to learn about the history of New Caledonia, from the Kanaks to the Caledoches, and to give you a taste of independence in a safe yet unfamiliar environment. 10/10 would try again!
