Today is the first day of school for 2019, which means it is 20 years since the first ever day of school for Alia College. The school opened in January 1999 with just 21 Year 7 and 8 students. Since that day, the school has seen growth in student numbers and we are kicking off 2019 with 65 students. Also in that time, there have been six different school sites, with the school moving between various rented premises before purchasing the current site in the historic Kawarau mansion in Hawthorn East.
Some things have not changed in the 20 years, however. The school values of respect, of open communication, and of providing an environment most conducive to learning are still strong. These are embodied in the way that teachers and students treat each other and develop relationships, and the high levels of student satisfaction in the school. The democratic nature of the school also sees students getting voice in significant elements of how the school runs; from giving input on recruitment and enrolment, to running meetings and school events, including information nights and school camps.
We are thrilled that Alia College has reached such a point. It really is thanks to the hard work and commitment of teachers, administration staff, volunteers, Bob and his wife Lesley, and all of the students, and their families, over the last 20 years that the school has reached this significant and satisfying milestone.
